Hammer of the Gods
I got this last night and played through the first level. So far so good. You play as this boy who carries a giant wooden hammer on his shoulder (you acquire more weapons as you progress through the game) and traverse through a few houses, shops, restaurants, a sauna place and construction site. You start up with two attacks (horizontal and vertical swings), jump and crouch as your basic skills and you acquire more as you advance in later stages. When you beat enemies, like the construction workers in the first level, they drop an item and sometimes fly into the background, which is quite funny. Each stage ends with a boss battle like a giant construction worker or Godzilla. Your character falls if hit once but the game has a very forgiving checkpoint system where it instantly loads just a couple seconds before you died without any loading screen. Each stage presents a unique environment along with different enemies to keep things from getting repetitive. All in all, it's a solid and fun game, especially to those who love Anime, Manga, Japanese video games and anything to do with Japanese culture.
Hammerin' Zero
I was really excited about this game. So much so, that I preordered it. I was truly disappointed. Before you buy this game, read some reviews. I know that I whish I would have. I am going to keep my review simple because that is the way that I prefer to read them.
Pros:
Great graphics. We are not talking God of War COO here, but they are definitely top notch.
Cool looking bosses. The bosses are big and arcady if you know what I mean, very cool to look at.
Unique weapons.
Cons:
There are a couple of things I could complain about here, but there is really only one that matters...
The controls. The main character, whom I would expect to be deft and agile, after all this is a side scrolling fighter, handles like a Mac truck. The controls are very sluggish making it impossible to be good at this game. This is not twitch game play, it is prediction game play. I say that because it takes so long for your character to respond to button presses that you have to almost predict the enemy's move and respond beforehand. It makes the game impossibly difficult, incredibly frustrating and completely sucks the fun right out of it.
I feel that the controls make this game almost completely unplayable.
If your are looking for a good side scroller, check out Prinny: Can I really be the Hero? It is a lot of fun and controls much better.
